Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2020
Parliament passed the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill (the Bill) on 5 August 2020. The Bill includes some new changes that hadn’t been previously announced.

Rent increase freeze
From 26 September 2020 the rent increase freeze will no longer be in effect. It was introduced in March 2020 under the COVID-19 Response (Urgent Management Measures) Legislation Act 2020.

2018 Severe Housing Deprivation
As part of improving data on homelessness, Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga contracted the University of Otago to produce an estimate of the homeless population using 2018 Census data.
