As part of improving data on homelessness, we contracted the University of Otago to produce a new estimate of the homeless population using 2018 Census data.

Housing Affordability Measure (HAM)

There are different ways we work to understand how affordable a home is. We have some measures that help us understand where renters are facing affordability barriers in terms of renting, or when considering whether or not they can afford to buy a home.

The Rental Bond database records all new rental bonds lodged with the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment each month.

We've created a dashboard of housing indicators drawn from:

  • data purchased from Corelogic on housing sales, rating valuations and property attributes
  • MBIE's tenancy bond database
  • the National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity (NPS-UDC).

Public housing - Funding review 2019

The review of subsidised housing expenditure was commissioned by Government in 2019 to get a deeper understanding of the cost to deliver public housing and options for more cost-effectively funding public housing.
