Comparison of Experimental Housing Affordability Measure Rent and Buy

Looking at the Housing Affordability Measure for renters and potential first home buyers together can give us an understanding of whether they are increasing or decreasing relative to each other.

National rent-buy comparison

At a national level, the share of potential first home buyer households with below average incomes remained fairly constant relative to the share of renter households with below average incomes after housing costs from December 2017 to December 2018.

In Auckland, the share of potential first home buyer households with below average incomes remained constant relative to the share of renter households with below average incomes after housing costs from December 2017 to December 2018.

In Christchurch City, the share of potential first home buyer households with below average incomes improved slightly relative to the share of renter households with below average incomes after housing costs from December 2017 to December 2018.
