The Government has announced the milestone of delivering an extra 8,000 public housing places. Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in partnership with Kāinga Ora and Community Housing Providers have played a significant part in this achievement.

Between November 2017 and 30 June 2021, 8,121 public housing places have been added by Kāinga Ora and Community Housing Providers. This now takes the total number of public housing places in New Zealand to 74,337 at 30 June.

Kāinga Ora is delivering more public housing than ever before to help meet the rising demand in many locations.  Over the past three years they have accelerated the pace and scale of new builds and large-scale development projects.

Community Housing Providers also play an integral role delivering public housing and their strong community connections and expertise complement Kāinga Ora’s delivery.

Through the Public Housing Plan, the Ministry is continuing to work towards delivering another 8,000 new public and transitional homes by 2024, announced as part of Budget 2020.
