The Public Housing Plan 2021-2024, outlining the locations and number of additional public and transitional housing places to be delivered by June 2024, has been released.

Budget 2020 provided funding for an additional 6,000 public and 2,000 transitional houses.

Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga - Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is partnering with  Kāinga Ora, Iwi and Māori, Community Housing Providers and local government to address housing shortages.

The plan will take a place-based and MAIHI (Māori and Iwi Housing Innovation Framework for Action) approach to respond to different housing needs especially for Māori.

The plan concentrates on locations where there is an urgent need for public housing.  Public and transitional houses will also continue to be delivered across the country, but there will be a focus on Northland, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Napier, Hastings, Palmerston North and Whanganui.
