Te MAIHI Whare Wānanga brings Government and Māori housing partners together in Te Taitokerau

Today, Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development came together with Government, Iwi and Māori partners at our third Te MAIHI Whare Wānanga, which was held both in person at Waitangi and online.

Te MAIHI Whare Wānanga is the place where we come together and build towards the future . It provides a forum where Crown Ministers, Māori and Iwi come together to discuss and drive the priorities and implementation of Te MAIHI o te Whare Māori – Māori and Iwi Housing Innovation (MAIHI) Framework for Action. 

One of the priorities discussed at today’s Whare Wānanga has been the launch of the MAIHI Ka Ora Implementation Plan.

Over the past year, Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga and Te Puni Kōkiri have worked with iwi, hapū and Māori organisations to take the shared aspirations of MAIHI Ka Ora – the National Māori Housing Strategy and develop an Implementation Plan that shows how we can partner together to turn those aspirations into better housing outcomes for whānau.

While MAIHI Ka Ora sets the vision for Māori housing for the next 30 years, the Implementation Plan will span three to four years. It takes a system-wide approach, for all government departments and Māori housing partners to work together towards the outcomes set out in MAIHI Ka Ora.

It clearly focuses on the steps we need to take over the next 3-4 years to make progress toward our ultimate vision – that all whānau have safe, healthy affordable homes with secure tenure, across the Māori housing continuum.
