Māori Housing Strategy

Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development together with Te Puni Kōkiri – Ministry of Māori Development and Te Matapihi are working in partnership with the Māori housing sector to develop the new Māori Housing Strategy.

The new strategy is an important opportunity to shape Māori housing priorities for the next 30 years and aims to:

  • set medium to long-term goals and short-term priorities to improve housing outcomes for Māori
  • coordinate the efforts of key government agencies to support these goals
  • set out how Māori and the Crown can work in partnership towards these goals.

The draft Māori housing strategy will be developed in parallel with the Government Policy Statement on Housing and Urban Development (GPS-HUD) to align the strategic direction between:

  • the GPS-HUD
  • Te Maihi o te Whare Māori – the Māori and Iwi Housing Innovation (MAIHI) Framework for Action
  • and the new Māori Housing Strategy.
