An evaluation report on the Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga programme pathway, to deliver Māori-led housing initiatives, has been released today by Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Launched in 2021, Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga was a four-year commitment designed to accelerate the delivery of Māori-led housing projects. The programme provided funding for small-scale Māori housing projects and larger developments, ranging from repairing existing homes to building new ones in partnership with Te Puni Kōkiri.

The evaluation report offers a high-level overview of how iwi-led prototypes contributed to addressing housing supply needs for whānau Māori within their respective communities. It highlights the successes and challenges faced by these initiatives and provides valuable insights for future housing projects.

The Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga programme concluded in May 2025, making way for the Government’s new flexible funding approach to investment. This new approach aims to improve value for money and increase flexibility to meet housing needs more effectively.
