Government announces direction for social housing reform

The Government has announced the direction of reform for New Zealand’s social housing system as part of the Review of Social Housing.

As part of this direction, the Government has signalled a package of changes to housing support settings through Budget 2026. These include changes to income-related rent, the Accommodation Supplement and Temporary Additional Support.

The review aims to create a fairer and more effective system, and to better support people into long-term housing independence.
