New regulations for methamphetamine contamination in rental homes
Published 08 Oct 25
The Government has announced new regulations to help landlords and tenants manage methamphetamine contamination in rental properties.
The Government is introducing new regulations under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, making it clear about how to manage meth contamination in rental properties.
The new regulations make it clear when properties are contaminated, required decontamination levels, tenancy termination thresholds, landlord testing responsibilities, testing methods, and handling abandoned goods.
These changes are informed by expert scientific advice and feedback from tenants, landlords and the rental sector. They will help protect health, ensure responses are proportionate, and give everyone more confidence in the rental sector.
The regulations are expected to come into force in 2026.
